5 Elements in Vastu

Importance of 5 Elements in Vastu

5 elements in Vastu

We all know that the whole universe is made up of five basic elements i.e. Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Space. These five basic elements are related to our five senses of smell, taste, hearing, touch, and sight. The aim of Vastu Shastra is to teach individuals how to live in perfect harmony by balancing these five main elements. All these ‘five elements’ sustain life on the planet and are neutral, unbiased, and impartial to us – yet we cannot control them. There is an invisible and constant interaction between these elements.

Internal relationship between the elements, senses, and directions:-

Earth Element:-

Earth is the first and foremost element of nature that exerts maximum energy. It gives stability, balance, and patience in character. Earth, the third planet in order from the Sun, is a big magnet, with the North and South poles as centers of attraction. Its magnetic field and gravitational force have powerful effects on everything on the Earth, living and non-living. The Vastu principle of placing the head towards the South while sleeping is based on Earth’s magnetic property.
Earth is tilted by about 23½ at the meridian on either side for six months called Uttarayan and Dakshinayan. It rotates on its own axis from West to East which leads to a cycle of day and night. The Earth revolves around the Sun and has a gravitational and magnetic force. Human beings have a natural and emotional affinity with the Earth. South-West area denotes Earth element which indicates heaviness. It gives more stability and controlling powers.

Water Element:-

Water is present on the earth in the form of rain, lakes, rivers, oceans, and the sea. Water is the essence of life. Its real spirit speaks of movement and flow of life. Water is an element associated with North-East. It is a combination of Hydrogen and Oxygen in the ratio of 2:1. As we all know, two-thirds of the earth’s surface is water and more than 80% of our body is water. It is associated with, clarity of thoughts, creation of new vision, the conception of new ideas in your life, and healing energy. When we are constructing a house, Vastu provides important information about the placement of water sources like wells, boring, underground water tanks, overhead water tanks,s, etc. As per Vastu if there is sufficient water in a residential structure, it implies a good inflow of funds. To get maximum benefits, water sources should be kept in the North-East direction of the house.

Fire Element

Fire relates to the Sun which is known for its strength. It represents enthusiasm, passion, and spirited strength. Sun is the soul of the universe. It is difficult to imagine life on earth without the Sun. Fire is a modifier, converting the energy of other objects into other forms i.e. heat, light, ash, and smoke. Fire is the basis of all sources of energy including thermal power and atomic power.
Fire is associated with South-East direction. The formation of day and night, the changes of seasons, is brought about by the movement of the Sun in relation to the movement of the earth. The fire sources like kitchen fire and electronic gadgets should be placed in the South-East direction to get positive energy as well as other benefits. In every house, proper ventilation for sunlight is necessary as it is one natural source of light for human beings.

Air Element

Air is a life-giving element that is vital for our survival. The atmosphere above the earth consists of oxygen (21%), nitrogen (78%), carbon dioxide, water vapor, dust, etc. which are essential for all living beings.
The air element is associated with the North-West direction. Vastu provides proper guidelines for the placements of doors, windows, balconies, ventilation, the height of your home structures, and placements of trees and plants, to balance the air element. Air gives the courage to try new things, take risks for growth, and explore one’s inner self.

Space Element

light, heat, gravitational force and electromagnetic waves, magnetic field, etc. It provides shelter to the other four elements. The space element is associated with the central region. The Brahmasthan is the heart of the house, and it should always be left open and free of obstructing objects. It is also best if this portion is open to the sky so that premises have a benefit of space element as per Vastu Shastra. Space provides the knowledge and awareness to understand new and creative ideas. Space represents expansion or enhancement, spread, communication, and even thought processes.
